"You Can Learn a Lot From a Dummy"

Tonight was my long-awaited CPR class for the Young Women. What a total hoot it was. It's been a loooong time since I've been involved in a YW activity--probably close to 10 years, back when I was a Laurel advisor. Since then I've mostly been with adults, Achievement Days or now with the Primary.

I am so NOT instantly comfortable with teenage girls. Maybe because even when I was a teenage girl I didn't click with other teenage girls??! ;) I've never taught CPR before. I've certainly taken my share of certification classes, but teaching it was a new thing. It ended up being a really comfortable, fun class to teach. The girls had good questions, were quick to participate, were quick to make fun and have fun, so it really was an enjoyable night.

To all of you out there, the US has one of the lowest percentages of citizens trained in CPR. I do not mean we all need to be certified to the hilt like healthcare workers, but a community CPR class is such a good thing for EVERYONE. 75-80% of out-of-hospital heart attacks occur in the home. So being trained in CPR may save a loved one! Think about it.

I'm so glad your class went well!! I'm not all that comfortable w/ teenagers either, but I have about 6 years before I'll actually have one in the house, so hopefully I'll warm up to the whole teenage thing by then! :)

I really need to go to a CPR class again - I went as a teenager but have forgotten pretty much all of it. Thanks for reminding me how important that is.

I was just thinking about CPR the other day when I watched The Prestige. The girl comes out of the water seconds after she loses conciousness, and they just say, aww, darn, she's dead. AAAH!!! It's definitley a good skill to know! I've seen it save lives firsthand.

i've been trained... and have zero recollection of how to do it-- i'm sure i'd end up killing the person instead of saving her!!!!!!!
(how funny that you didn't initially click with the chicks, when that's what i'm drawn too... more differences in the sisters, eh?)

hey erin, where ya been?

you can't "end up killing the person instead of saving her" as she's DROPPED DEAD on you. Any effort can help! HA! how's that for sensitive? (and, yes, I did tell the girls that, too).

That's a great idea about doing CPR for Young Women. One of my YW's moms is a nurse and it'd be a great fit! (I agree Cami, about that scene from the Prestige.) I like Young Women now that I'm a leader SOOO much more than when I was in it. Never thought I'd be "the Young Women person" but I keep getting put back in after brief trips to Primary.
